She has become a soccer icon in Colombia
Linda Caicedo has become a soccer icon in Colombia at the age of 18. As a member of Real Madrid and the Colombian Women’s Soccer team, Caicedo is a player known for her fearless attitude, and athletic skills. She has also lived through many experiences despite her short age, learning how to triumph and enjoy every opportunity that appears her way on and off the field.
When she was 15 years old, Caicedo was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She thought that meant the end of her career as a soccer player. "Mentally, that was a very challenging moment in my life," she said to FIFA.
I'm thankful that it happened when I was young. That I was able to recover and that I had the support of my family. Now I feel great. What happened made me grow. I'm happy and I'm thankful to be here."
Caicedo became a star in Colombia’s team when she was 17 years old, showing her skill in the South American Cup Sub 17, the Sub 17 World Cup, and the Copa America. “For management, it wasn’t easy to trust in a 17-year-old player but that gave me the strength to show off my soccer,” she said in an interview per Cambio Colombia. “It feels like an enormous joy. The arrival to Colombia was amazing, not only for me but for my teammates. We’ve become the athletic inspiration of many young people and also adults. I’m very grateful to all Colombians for their support.”
In February, the world realized Caicedo’s international potential when she was signed by Real Madrid. “I’m very excited to be here in a club as big as Real Madrid and can’t wait to do things right,” she said to Real Madrid TV. “It’s always been my dream to pay abroad and today to be here at Real Madrid it’s incredible. I hope I can make my family proud.”
Caicedo’s performance in the World Cup was enjoyed by fans all over the world. Following Colombia’s opening match, where they won 2 - 0 against South Korea, Caicedo scored one goal and was named the match’s MVP. “I dedicate this to my family, to everyone that has supported me, to my partner, and to everyone who wishes me the best,” she said per DSports.
