It was George Santayana, the cultural philosopher, who observed that 'those who can't remember the past are condemned to repeat it'. Which doesn't bode well for those of us who struggled at history. Are we bound to cover the same ground time and time again? I don't think we're meant to take his words literally. In fact, paying too much attention to the past comes with its own dangers. Your future isn't dictated by previous mistakes. If you let go of a weight you've been carrying you can free yourself to move on.
