It was Bernard of Clairvaux who wrote that 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions'. As a twelfth-century monk, you've got to wonder what on earth he could have known of it. And, if he did, is that a problem? Or, like so many opposites, do heaven and hell have more in common than we think? Was it because of his saintliness that he had such insight? We'll never know. If this kind of philosophical question gets in the way of a straightforward decision today, just go with what feels right to you.
