MTV Movie & TV Awards 2017: Camila Cabello brings the heat, Zac Efron babysits, plus more highlights

Latin heat! Camila Cabello, Pitbull and J Balvin took to the stage to perform the lead track from the Fate of the Furious soundtrack, Hey Ma. The trio performed the single for the first time in front of a live audience at the award ceremony.

The performance, which kicked off the Fast and the Furious franchise’s Generation Award celebration, featured the former Fifth Harmony member wearing a stunning red dress as she danced along with the Cuban rapper and Colombian singer in front of fire.

Fast and the Furious honored with the Generation Award

Instead of presenting the Generation Award to one actor – in the spirit of flipping the script, MTV presented this year's coveted prize to the Fast and the Furious franchise. The film’s star and director, Vin Diesel called co-stars Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez up to the stage to honor the film that has, over the years, created a family unit.

While accepting the award, Vin became emotional as he paid tribute to his “brother,” the late Paul Walker. He said, “In 2002, I was standing on this stage and MTV had given Paul Walker and I an award for Best Duo — and now 15 years later, I’m with my whole family and you’re giving us the generation award.”

Adam Devine sets the stage of fire with Beauty and the Beast opening number

Things got hot when host Adam Devine opened up the show. The Modern Family star dressed up as the beast from the hit Disney film and ushered in the laughs with a musical number with some of his A-list friends.

One of the major highlights came when it was revealed that Hailee Steinfeld would play his Belle. The Edge of Seventeen star came out in Belle’s signature yellow dress – and got a nod of approval from Emma Watson who was seen applauding and saying “She’s so cute.” Haliee and Adam’s Pitch Perfect costar Rebel Wilson played the role of Mrs. Potts, while Josh Gad reprised his role as LeFou and Blake Anderson stepped in as Lumiere.

Emma Watson makes history

Not only was Emma Watson the belle of the ceremony – the Beauty and the Beast star made history as the award show’s first winner of the gender-neutral Best Actor prize for her role as Belle in the Disney film.

The actress gave an inspiring speech as she accepted the first award of the evening. Emma said, “Firstly, I feel I have to say something about the award itself. The first acting award in history that doesn't separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience. MTV's move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone. But to me, it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes. And that doesn't need to be separated into two different categories.”

She continued,  “I think I am being given this award because of who Belle is and what she represents. The villagers in our fairy tale wanted to make Belle believe that the world is smaller than the way she saw it, with fewer opportunities for her—that her curiosity and passion for knowledge and her desire for more in life were grounds for alienation. I loved playing someone who didn't listen to any of that."

Little stars steal the show

Some of the cutest moments came when Logan’s Dafne Keen and This is Us star Lonnie Chavis upstaged their older co-stars. When 12-year-old Dafne walked on stage to accept the Best Duo honor with Hugh Jackman she had to let him know who was boss. “Thank you, thank you. Listen, on behalf of —” Hugh said before she hilariously snatched the mic.

“You do 17 years [as Wolverine], I don’t speak for half of the movie, and you get to say the thank-yous? Okay, no,” she said as she grabbed the mic from her costar. “Tonight I want to thank MTV and mom,” Keen continued. “Happy Mother’s Day in Spain.” She said before adding Hugh’s thank yous to his parents and joining him for an epic growl.

Later in the show, Milo Ventimiglia and his on-screen son Lonnie Chavis accepted the award for Best Tearjerker. Lonnie, nine, who plays little Randall on This is Us, couldn’t contain his excitement as he accepted the award and had to note how heavy it was. “I can’t keep faking that this is not heavy,” he said, earnings laughs from the audience.

The cast of 13 Reasons Why and Stranger Things fan-out over each other

Netflix series collided when the cast of 13 Reasons Why presented the cast of Stranger Things with the final award of the night.13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford kept her cool until it was announced that Millie Bobby Brown’s series would take home the first-ever golden popcorn statue for Show of the Year. “We love this show,” Katherine said. “Stranger Things.” As Millie and the rest of the kids took the stage they were seen greeting their Netflix family with smiles and hugs.

Zac the babysitter

The Baywatch star took on a new role at the May 7 award show. Zac held on to DJ Khaled’s social media star son, Asahd Khaled, in the audience during the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Best kiss goes to Moonlight

Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome from the Oscar-winning film Moonlight beat out a number of stars including La La Land's Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling and Beauty and the Beasts Emma Watson and Dan Stevens for the Best Kiss award.
