Eiza González and 9 more stars bringing ‘70s style back this season

Colorful and bold prints, velvet suits, bell-bottoms, head to toe suede, crochet.... That’s right, the funky  fashion trends  that were popular in the ‘70s are making a comeback. And although what goes around comes around, and other decades are also making an appearance this season, styles from the disco era are grooving back into celebrity wardrobes and are stronger than ever.

Seventies-inspired looks were featured on the runways at the world’s most important fashion shows, with the confident and relaxed style that emerged when women’s liberation was at the forefront are a recurring theme. Think Bianca Jagger, Pam Grier, Jane Birkin, Diana Ross and Farrah Fawcett and check out how celebrities are embracing these retro looks from the decade of counterculture, disco, funk and fun that left its mark on the 20th century and beyond.

Retro suede is back! Here’s how to rock it like your fave celebs

Here's how to wear white knee-high boots this season

The 1970s were one of the sexiest decades in modern day fashion, marked by that eclectic mix that still captivates today. Dresses with daringly deep necklines and long sleeves, like this one from Chanel worn by Margot Robbie at the world premiere of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, were hot 40 years ago and are back on the map.

In 2020, crochet is getting a major update and it is perfect for more dressed-up occasions, elevating it from a strictly beach or boho vibe.

Velvet was a one of the decade’s most worn fabrics, and now you can wear it in retro-vibe suits, like the one seen on Zendaya, with wide leg trousers and blazer with wide ‘70s-inspired collar. Another touch of cool is that disco-ready flat cap.

Bell-bottoms have always been a comfy choice and they’ve slowly advanced from the ‘60s and ‘70s until now. You’ll see glam bell bottom jeans in a lot of street style looks - slightly more styled, including some with split-hems that show off your footwear. You’ll even see celebrities like Daisy Ridley wearing them in a more formal style.

Exaggerated collars are also coming back, and they make an even bigger statement when they contrast with your top, like we saw on the spring/summer Paco Rabanne runway. In her spring collection, Victoria Beckham also showed off an elegant, practical and polished way of wearing statement lapels with blazers and jackets. They also look great with just a sweater, as VB demonstrates here.

In the tumultuous ‘70s, prints were also predominant, many of them in tones like mustard yellow, cool pastels, sage green and burnt orange - which were seen in the spring/summer 2020 collections from Christopher Kane, Marc Jacobs, Prada, Etro and Alberta Ferretti in psychedelic and bohemian prints. Katie Holmes opted to wear the trend in this Fendi chenille draped midi dress that she accessorized with different-sized necklaces to finish off the bohemian look.

Bra tops were really popular back in the day. Here, Kate Hudson wears one from the Tom Ford spring 2020 collection that’s a modern take on the retro version. The look is supremely elegant when combinede with a blazer and a high-waisted maxi skirt, just like the designer did for the spring/summer 2020 runway.

Halternecks were everywhere in the disco fever era, seen in both tops and dresses. Eiza González joined ‘70s fashion trend by wearing this elegant and sexy gold slip dress from Galvan London to an Oscars 2020 after party.

There were a lot of suede pieces seen on the spring/summer 2020 runways for labels like Alberta Ferreti and Altuzarra, especially in brown and camel shades. Cindy Crawford’s daughter Kaia Gerber has been seen in suede flares, and on this occasion, a bohemian-style overcoat from Fendi.

This year, bell sleeves are getting an update as well. We’ve seen them on silky button-down blouses, boho dresses and red carpet ready gowns. Take a look at this dress from the Erdem Resort 2020 collection that actress Olivia Wilde wore and the lace that adds an even more vintage feel.
