Ten trends to look out for at the Oscars this year

01/13/2020 14:02 CET Updated on January 16, 2020 22:26 UTC By Ignacio Alen
LEER EN ESPAñOL

After all the excitement of the announcement of the nominees of the 92nd Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards, comes the speculation as to who will wear what on the evening of February 9. While we can usually rely on the likes of  Jennifer Lopez  or  Cate Blanchett  to up the glamor stakes, we also spot something unexpected and original on the red carpet too.

So, while we count down the days until the award show, here are some of our predictions of trends and looks we’ll likely see at the Oscars.

Polka dots

On a night of champagne bubbles, what better look than a bubbly polka dot dress? Caroline Herrera’s contemporary take on a classic may well be an inspiration for one of the award-winning actresses.

Sartorial inspiration

The tailored suit has been finding its way into women’s closets for a while and it’s now even shaking up the traditional idea of how an evening gown should look. Virginie Viard for Chanel has the perfect feminine take on the classic suit with this flared coat dress in fuchsia-red velvet.

Pants with a long-tailed top

Those looking for an alternative to the predictable gown may go for a take on the pants with a long-tailed top. Seen on the haute couture runways from Givenchy, this is a comfy, refreshing and very chic look.

Bold Jumpsuits

Another great alternative to the traditional dress is the stylish but comfy jumpsuit. Richard Quinn ‘ s offering is made of sumptuous, generous fabrics and vibrant colors – a perfect red carpet look.

Extra-big sleeves

Big, puffy sleeves are back – as was seen on the spring 2020 runways of Christian Siriano. And what better time to wear this bombastic style than at the main Hollywood event of the year?

Mellow yellow

Yellow is the color of sunny days and a great way to warm up the start of the year. It’s also a great statement color on the red carpet – such as in this maxi dress by Stephane Rolland. The number is the perfect way to contrast with the surroundings and guarantee being a focal point of the evening.

Pantone’s color of the day

At the end of last year, Pantone proclaimed that Classic Blue would be the color of 2020. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see this shade incorporated into an outfit at the Oscars. Valentino was one of the many designers who included it in their lines like this red carpet-worthy volumunious design.

Big bows

Jennifer Lopez already gave us hint of this trend at the Golden Globes in her golden bowed dress. Over-sized bows have often been used as a focal point in recent catwalk shows like Balenciaga who used one to adorn the back of this golden creation, giving the dress a winged effect.

The cinematography of Iris Van Herpen

The genius of Iris Van Herpen deserves its own special mention as her designs are an amazing mixture of art, fashion and technology and have become a bit of a feature on red carpets too. Her oufits create a mesmerizing optical illusion which is perfect for standing out from the crowd on Hollywood’s big night.

Princess Ball Gowns

In recent runway shows, we’ve seen the return of the volumnious ball gown. No doubt inspired by 80’s fashion like a lot of other recent trends, this Oscar De La Renta with a high-low skirt line is a perfect example.

Let’s see how many of our fashion predictions come true on February 9!
