Emma Stone’s “Cruella” spin-off film is going straight to Disney+ instead of a movie theater release

Disney is releasing several of its new movies to the subscription service.

2020 has been an incredibly tough year for many different industries and businesses, including Hollywood. During normal times, a lot of us found joy in waiting with anticipation for a new movie to hit theaters. But since most movie theaters across the country are closed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of movie releases are heading straight to subscription services.

News came out this week that actress Emma Stone’s upcoming spin-off “Cruella” film and Tom Hanks’ “Pinocchio” film are among the handful of new movies that are heading straight to Disney+, according to MSN.

The new ”Cruella” film is being considered a crime comedy that will be directed by Craig Gillespie. The premise of the film focuses on the origin story of the iconic Disney villain, played by Stone. The film will also be starring Emma Thompson and Mark Strong, according to MSN.

The new “Pinocchio” film will be a live-action revamp of the 1940 classic animated film. Academy-award winning actor, Hanks will play Geppetto.

In addition to the “Cruella” and “Pinocchio” films, “Peter Pan and Wendy,” starring Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell, is also on the list of films possibly heading straight to Disney+, according to MSN. It hasn’t been confirmed yet if Disney+ subscribers will have to pay a premium fee for these movies.

This isn’t the first time Disney has experienced this shakeup as the live-action “Mulan” film was released straight to the streaming platform back in September.

One of the more recent Disney movies releases happening before the new year is the upcoming Pixar film, “Soul” which has a lineup of talented voices in it. Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Questlove, Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs, and Angela Bassett are all playing voices in the upcoming film that is coming to Disney+ on Christmas Day, according to MSN.

Reportedly, going forward Disney is considering adding a lot of their upcoming films to the streaming service as opposed to have a theater release since the pandemic is still present, according to Deadline.
