Glam Masters judges on Kim Kardashian's influence on the beauty industry

If you've ever wanted a Project Runway-like show but for beauty, then you're in for a treat. Lifetime's new show Glam Masters premieres on Thursday, March 1, and it has a star-studded panel. Co-produced by KKW beauty founder Kim Kardashian West and Diana Madison, the beauty competition is hosted by Laverne Cox and has a diverse set of judges to help her pick this season's glam master: the original beauty vlogger Kandee Johnson, beauty editor and co-creator of Milk Makeup Zanna Roberts Rassi and expert makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic. The judges recently gathered together for a panel in New York City where they talked about the ever-evolving world of the beauty industry, what beauty means to them and what products they're currently loving.

"The show came about because I host two online shows, The Lowdown with Diana Madison and Style Lab, and I always had makeup artists come and do my makeup, and a lot of them were famous Instagram makeup artists and some were not famous, you know, they didn’t have a big following, but they all always came in and said how they wanted to be discovered by Kim Kardashian on Instagram," Diana told HOLA! USA at the event. "I felt like there was a secret competition that they all had, like they’re all trying to out-do one another to get discovered. I was working on a couple other projects at that time, and I was like, 'You know what? There’s a show here,' so I brought the idea to Kim and she said, 'Let’s do it!' And here we are three years later."

Laverne also noted that Kanye West's wife and her family have had a profound impact on the beauty industry. The Orange is the New Black star said, "I think that between Kylie's lip kits and Kim’s contour kits, I mean, Kim’s influenced an entire generation. There’s a generation of girls who want to be her and look like her. It’s almost impossible to quantify, but then you look at the numbers. That speaks for itself."

Laverne, who is a celebrated trans woman of color, deeply understands the power of makeup and how it can make someone feel. "There were years when my look was a little busted and I didn’t realize it, but I felt lovely! And people felt that," she shared. "And people felt the aspiration of it all. So for me, beauty is owning whatever it is that you’re rocking and rocking it hard."

The ladies all agreed that beauty comes from within. As Zanna expertly noted: "It’s interesting because I’ve worked with the most beautiful models in the world, and you can tell that if they’re not happy on the inside, they won’t look beautiful on the outside. There is no debating that. When you’re happy on the inside and confident, it’s going to show on the outside."
