Kate Middleton's connection to Princess Diana through her royal jewels

Twenty years after her death, Princess Diana still remains one of the world’s most prominent style icons. The People’s Princess' style has influenced many, including her daughter-in-law Kate Middleton.

The Duchess of Cambridge honors Diana’s memory by wearing her engagement ring. Kate’s love for Diana’s signature style of jewelry doesn’t stop there. Here is a look at all of the moments Kate has honored Diana’s timeless pieces.

Ceylon sapphire engagement ring

The most famous ring in the world! Diana was presented with an oval 12-carat Ceylon sapphire surrounded by a cluster of 14 solitaire diamonds set in white gold by Prince Philip in 1981. In 2010, Prince William surprised the world when he presented the same ring to his then fiancée Kate Middleton. The Duke, who lost his mother in 1997, wanted to make sure the late Princess was a part of the biggest day of his life.

Lover's Knot tiara

Both Princesses wore one of the oldest heirlooms in the royal family. The pearl Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara is the headpiece that was most beloved by Diana. The tiara was made by Garrard in 1914 with Queen Mary’s personal touches – with pearls and diamonds that the family already had in possession.

The crown was presented to Diana as a wedding gift from Queen Elizabeth. The People’s Princess wore it for the first time at the opening of state parliament in November of 1981. Now, like her late mother-in-law, Kate wears the piece for formal occasions, most recently during the Spanish state dinner in July 2017.

Nigel Milne pearl bracelet 

The arm pearl piece was created by Nigel Milne in 1988 for the People’s Princess. Diana is seen on the left, wearing the piece with a pale blue Catherine Walker gown during the Birthright charity event in 1989. Decades later, Kate was spotted wearing the bracelet in July 2017 during her state visit to Poland.

Saudi Arabian sapphire earrings 

One of Diana’s most notable and favorite pieces to date are the single Saudi Arabian sapphire earrings, surrounded by ten round diamonds. Diana wore the earrings, which came from the strap of a watch she was presented with by the Saudi Crown Prince as a wedding present, for the first time to mark the birth of Prince Harry in 1984.

When she died, the earrings were left to her sons. Shortly after their engagement in 2010, William presented them to Kate, who now wears them in a drop style.

Diamond and pearl earrings by Collingwood

The Collingwood diamond and pearl earrings have become one of the standout pieces for Kate and Diana. The earrings were gifted to Diana by the jeweler once she officially became the Princess of Wales.

The earrings which feature two bezel stud diamonds that attach to a conical component, and drop to an egg-shaped white pearl, have been wore by Kate on various occasions. Most recently during a trip to Belgium in July 2017.

Gold plated pearl earrings 

Although these earrings weren’t Diana’s, Kate gave a stylish nod to the Princess when she stepped out in Oscar de la Renta gold disc button earrings. Kate’s earrings designed with natural oysters in mind, are reminiscent of Diana’s Mabe pearls which were surrounded by a thick gold rim - and worn in various styles.
