Donald Trump marked his first birthday as President of the United States on Wednesday, June 14. Though it should have been a joyous occasion, the commander-in-chief’s special day coincided with the congressional baseball shooting that wounded House Majority Whip Steve Scalise.

The president, who turned 71, and First Lady Melania Trump paid a surprise visit to the Louisiana congressman at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he is currently being treated after getting shot at a GOP baseball practice. Barron Trump’s parents brought flowers to the critically wounded lawmaker on Wednesday evening and spent time with his family before returning home to the White House.
Earlier in the day, the president made a statement on the Virginia shooting saying, “Everyone on that field is a public servant — our courageous police, our congressional aides who work so tirelessly behind the scenes with enormous devotion, and our dedicated members of Congress who represent our people.” He added, “We may have our differences, but we do well, in times like these, to remember that everyone who serves in our nation’s capital is here because, above all, they love our country.”
Despite the tragedy, Melania hosted a family dinner at the White House in honor of her husband’s 71st birthday. Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner and their two oldest children — Arabella, five, and Joseph, three — were in attendance for the gathering. The mom-of-three shared a photo from the celebration writing, “Great being with family tonight for a lovely birthday dinner hosted by @flotus for @realdonaldtrump.”
Tiffany Trump, who is set to attend Georgetown law school in D.C. this fall, joined her sister at the festivities. The 23-year-old posed for a sweet photo with her beaming father, which she captioned, "Happy Birthday dad @realdonaldtrump. I love you! 🎈." The president's oldest sons Eric and Donald Jr. also traveled to the nation's capital for the family affair with their respective spouses, Lara — who is expecting her first child — and Vanessa.
Donald Jr. posed for a photo outside of the president's residence with his wife and two of their five children. Attached to the image, he wrote, "Great evening visiting @realdonaldtrump on his birthday with Vanessa, Kai, and Donnie. Always amazing to see him in this new capacity and we couldn't be more proud. #happybirthday #maga #potus #birthday." Melania also took to social media posting a card that featured the presidential seal, which read: “Happy Birthday Mr. President.” Alongside the post the first lady simply added, “❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸."
