Melissa McCarthy gave one lucky mom the surprise of a lifetime while hosting Saturday Night Live. The treat came during the Emmy-winner's Mother's Day themed opening monologue. In honor of the holiday, Melissa recognized all of the moms in the audience, asking them to rise from their seats. What happened next made the crowd, and one ecstatic mother, go wild!
Things began in a pretty standard format, with the 46-year-old mentioning that it feels amazing to be hosting the show for the fifth time. “But even more amazing than that,” she continued, “it’s amazing that tomorrow is Mother’s Day! I am lucky to have two great girls and lucky to be the daughter of a great mom, Sandy McCarthy, who always sends me flowers on Mother’s Day… it’s so sweet.” After that, the comedian turned the tables.

“You know what, I’m looking out here and seeing all these people and I want to see everyone who is a mother up!” Melissa shouted, motioning for the moms in the audience to stand. “Come on! Take your moment!” she continued, gazing out at the crowd. The comedian then did a short bit about why these moms (and all moms) deserve acknowledgment: “Every single one of these ladies who stood up, have not been to the bathroom alone since they gave birth, they have not had a hot meal in years, all of our purses are filled with weird cracker crumbs…”

After speaking with one mom seated in the front of the audience, Melissa struck up a conversation with another. That’s when the fan favorite host took things up a notch. “Since my mom can’t be here, I need a little mom time…” she said, “so, can I give you a tour of the SNL backstage that only hosts get to see? That way, you’ll be my surrogate mom for the day.” The chosen mother, named Joan, was clearly game for the experience of a lifetime, as Melissa quickly ushered her backstage.

With cameras following, Melissa giddily showed Joan around the studio. Some of their encounters included: Alec Baldwin (who presented the mom with a hat) getting changed out of his Trump regalia, “SNL legend” the “hallway llama” (yes, an actual llama) and even a pair of random celebrities. As they turned a corner, none other than Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds were waiting to greet the delighted ladies. The cute couple looked thrilled to be at the show, hugging Joan, who was equally elated, and wishing her a “Happy Mother’s Day!” In the end, Melissa championed Joan through SNL’s famous host door, center stage, in front of millions of viewers. It’s unlikely that Joan’s children will be able to live up to this Mother’s Day gift.
