Queen Sonja and King Harald’s 80th birthday celebration was a royal affair to remember. A number of royals from across Europe flocked to Norway for the festivities being held on Tuesday, May 9. The event was a joint celebration in honor of the Queen’s upcoming milestone birthday on July 4 and the King’s birthday, which passed earlier this year on February 21.

The party kick off during the day with a display by the His Majesty’s Royal Guard at Slottsplassen (the palace square), which the public was invited to attend. In the evening, the Norwegian royal family — which included the monarchs’s daughter Princess Märtha Louise and their son Crown Prince Haakon and his wife Crown Princess Mette-Marit, in addition to their grandchildren, Leah Isadora Behn, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, Prince Sverre Magnus, Maud Angelica Behn and Emma Tallulah Behn — gathered on the balcony of the royal palace in Oslo, Norway, where they were joined by their royal guests as they greeted well-wishers.

Sweden’s King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia in addition to their children Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Carl Philip stepped out for the occasion with their respective spouses, Prince Daniel and Princess Sofia, who is pregnant with her second child. The expectant royal kept her growing baby bump under-wraps recycling her midnight blue full-skirt Oscar de la Renta gown, which she previously wore to the 2015 Nobel Prize Banquet.

Queen Mathilde and King Philippe of Belgium, the Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria of Luxembourg, in addition to Crown Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece, Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Princess Tatiana of Greece also attended the festivities. King Willem-Alexander traveled from the Netherlands with his wife Queen Maxima and his mother Beatrix for the joint birthday celebration.

While Crown Prince Frederik was on hand for the festivities, the Danish royal’s stylish wife, Crown Princess Mary, was escorted to the gala dinner by Monaco’s Prince Albert. Earlier in the day, the Norwegian palace shared a behind-the-scenes photo of the kitchen preparing dishes for the King and Queen's birthday dinner. Alongside the photo, the palace wrote, “The kitchen has begun setting up appetizer for the gala dinner. The court is in full swing.”
