Royals from across Europe came together on Tuesday to attend the funeral of Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. The 82-year-old Prince “died suddenly” last week. Richard's widow, Princess Benedikte of Denmark, 72, led mourners at the service on March 21, alongside her three children, Princess Alexandra, Princess Nathalie and Gustav Hereditary Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg.

The funeral was held at the Evangelische Stadtkirche church in the German town of Bad Berleburg. Princess Benedikte's sister Queen Margrethe II flew over from Denmark for the somber occasion, accompanied by her husband Prince Henrik in addition to Danish royal family members Crown Princess Mary, Crown Prince Frederik, Princess Marie and Prince Joachim.

Queen Silvia, whose husband King Carl XVI Gustaf is first cousins with the late royal’s wife, and her younger daughter Princess Madeleine, whose godmother is Princess Benedikte, represented Sweden at the funeral. Also in attendance were King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima and Willem-Alexander's mother Beatrix, who traveled from the Netherlands to pay their respects. Princess Märtha Louise of Norway, King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie of Greece were also pictured leaving the church after saying their final farewells to the late royal.

Richard passed away last week. Princess Benedikte's private secretary, Tommy M. Paulsen, announced the dad-of-three's death in a statement that read: "It is with great sadness that I, on behalf of Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte, announce that His Royal Highness Prince Richard has passed away. His Royal Highness died suddenly at Berleburg palace on the night of Monday 13 March."

Following her husband’s unexpected passing, Princess Benedikte traveled from Denmark to the couple's home, Berleburg Palace, in Germany. Benedikte, who is the younger sister of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, married the German Prince in 1968. The couple went on to have three children together – Gustav Hereditary Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, Princess Alexandra and Princess Nathalie. Richard also had four grandchildren.
