King Felipe and Queen Letizia are heading to Buckingham Palace. The Spanish monarchs have accepted an invitation from Queen Elizabeth to visit the UK this summer, marking their first trip to Britain since they became King and Queen in 2014. The couple's visit will take place from June 6 to 8.

"In this Sapphire Jubilee celebration year for Her Majesty the Queen, I am delighted that that Majesties King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain have accepted their invitation to visit the UK," said the British Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley. He added, "This State Visit will not only celebrate the long and deep royal and historic ties between our two countries, but also our strong relationship partners bilaterally, within Europe and on the global stage. Culture, commerce, education, science and innovation. This is an opportunity to celebrate and deepen those links."
A message from the British royal family's official Twitter account also announced the news tweeting, "The King of Spain, accompanied by Queen Letizia, has accepted an invitation from The Queen to pay to State Visit to the UK in June." Letizia and Felipe were due to visit Her Majesty last March, however a month before their expected departure, their trip was postponed due to the political situation in Spain. An official statement issued by the Spanish Foreign Office said: "Notice is given that due to the process of the formation of a new government currently underway in Spain, [the state] visit has been postponed."

Following the announcement, a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said that the Queen understood why the Spanish royals had chosen to postpone their trip. "The Queen has been informed of the Spanish Government's decision to cancel the forthcoming state visit," the statement said. "The Queen, of course, fully understands the decision and the context in which it was taken."
Her Majesty previously hosted Felipe's father King Juan Carlos in the UK in 1986. Details of this summer's itinerary have not yet been revealed, but royal watchers are hoping that Felipe and Letizia will be reunited with Prince William and Kate Middleton.
