Golden Globes: Rita Moreno, Guillermo del Toro and more Latinos who have proudly won the award
The Golden Globes is a celebration of film and television. In the over 70 years of the ceremony, some of the brightest and biggest Latino stars have been honored for their work. From stars such as Rita Moreno to Gina Rodriguez, and big and small screen gems like The Shape of Water and NYPD Blue, here’s a look at the Latinos who have won historic and iconic Golden Globes.
Joaquin Phoenix
The Puerto Rican born actor took home the big prize for best performance by an actor in a motion picture for his role in Joker at the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards. The star thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for serving vegan food.
Rita Moreno
She’s a veteran and a PEGOT! Rita took home for Best Supporting Actress for her role in West Side Story in 1961. Long live Anita!
Guillermo del Toro
The Mexican director took home the award for Best Director for a Motion Picture in 2018 for his film The Shape of Water
Benicio del Toro
In 2000, the Puerto Rican superstar took home the award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Traffic
America Ferrera
In 2007, America took home the Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series award for Ugly Betty. On top of that, the Honduran superstar gave an unforgettable speech.
Gina Rodriguez
The Jane the Virgin star won in the Best Actress in a Television Series of Comedy in 2015. Gina played the lead on the show until it wrapped in 2019
Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu
Alejandro can’t be stopped. In 2006, the Mexican filmmaker won Best Motion Picture for Babel. In 2014, his film Birdman won Best Screenplay.
Disney Pixar’s Coco
In 2017, director Lee Unkrich accepted the award for the film, which pays tribute to Mexican heritage. The movie won the award for Best Animated Feature Film
Andy Garcia
The Cuban actor won Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Godfather III.
Pedro Almodóvar
Pedro has taken home two Golden Globes. The Spanish filmmaker won in 1999 for All About My Mother, and in 2002 for Talk to Her.
Jimmy Smits
In 1995 the NYPD Blue star won the Best Actor in a TV Drama Series for his iconic role as Detective Bobby Simone
Luis Puenzo
In 1985, the Argentine filmmaker won the Best Motion Picture: Foreign Language trophy for his drama The Official Story
