In pictures: Inside the lavish White House state dinner for Justin Trudeau and wife Sophie

On Thursday evening the Obamas welcomed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie to the White House for a lavish state dinner. The guests of honor were joined at the event by Canadian film star Ryan Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively.
The evening was also special for the First family as it was the first state dinner attended by both of Barack's daughters Malia and Sasha.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau were the guests of honour at a state dinner hosted by President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama at the White House on Thursday evening.

Sophie continued to champion Canadian designers by choosing a floor-length purple Lucian Matis gown with pink floral details. Michelle also tipped her hat to the Great White North in a custom creation by Taiwanese-Canadian Jason Wu.

Canadian movie star Ryan Reynolds was accompanied by his stunning wife Blake Lively. The actress upped the glamour in a pale blue grecian-inspired gown.

Fouteen-year-old Sasha also looked beautiful wearing her hair up in a sophisticated braided updo. Talking about Barack's daughters Justin said,"I admire you very much, both of you, for your extraordinary strength and your grace."

On Thursday evening was a special night for the Obama family as it was the first state banquet that Barack's daughters Malia and Sasha have attended. Seventeen-year-old Malia looked stunning in a strapless cream dress.

Before dinner, the U.S. president took a moment to say a few words about the Canadian prime minister. "You may just be the most popular Canadian named Justin," joked Barack in reference to another very famous Canuck, Justin Bieber.

Following Obama's welcome Justin stood up to thank their gracious hosts and their welcoming country, throwing in a little joke for Mr Obama. "May the special connection between our two countries continue to flourish in the years to come, and may my grey hair come in at a much slower rate than yours has."

The guests were treated to bite-sized sweets with American and Canadian influences. The treats included cranberry squares, fleur de sel caramels and chocolate coconut slices.

Following the meal, guests filed into the State Dining Room for a special performance by five-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles before dancing the night away.
